Culture Shock

There are many reasons why people experience culture shock. Being away from home in a place where everything seems different can be very stressful. A different language, climate, food, people's way of interacting with each other, and local customs all take a period of time to adjust to. Especially where so many of the subtle cues that people use to communicate are different from your own. There is a definite learning period that each person must go through as they grow to become comfortable in a new culture.

Many experts have broken-down the process of Culture Shock into the following four phases; Honeymoon, Hostile, Grin and Bear it and finally Effective Adjustment. It is important to understand these phases because as you move through them, you will be able to recognize that many of the emotions that you are feeling fit into this pattern. Once you notice that it is much easier to get past your emotional reactions to the culture and focus your energy on moving through that particular phase. When you receive your Orientation handbook these phases will be covered in more detail and your coordinators will help you to reach the effective adjustment phase during your cultural training and orientation.
