Orientation

The first week of the program begins with the orientation week that includes language and cultural training. Each day covers a different topic that is designed to assist you in becoming comfortable and confident in your new environment. The aim of the orientation week is to help you become as independent as possible, so that you can be as effective as possible for your placement. The orientation covers the following topics:

Initial Safety Briefing This briefing is a 40-60 minute talk that takes place immediately after arriving at the orientation centre. This briefing is a quick overview of the basic health and safety precautions that interns should observe as well as several points of general orientation to ensure that interns are comfortable with the basics for their first day in the country.

Orientation Briefing This happens on the first full day in the country. This is a group orientation that includes an A-Z overview of what will be happening during each phase of your stay in the country. Health & Safety information from the Initial Safety Briefing will be reviewed and expanded on where necessary, the group will take a walking tour of the community surrounding the orientation centre or hostel, there will be an overview of what each training session will cover and any initial concerns or questions will be addressed.

Language Training Language Training in each country begins on the Monday of the orientation week and lasts four hours every day from Monday to Friday.

Placement Consultations Each intern will have placement consultations which are one-on-one meetings between the intern and their coordinator to go over any last minute information about their placement. This is an opportunity for interns to make sure that they understand what will be expected of them when they arrive at their placement and what they should expect from the organization they have been placed with.

History, Culture and Current Affairs We believe that if an intern is going to comfortably make the transition to living and working in their host country, they need to understand the historical and cultural framework of that country along with the current politics and economics. Transportation and Getting Around We provide an overview of various forms of public transportation. This day includes an outing to take a bus to an interesting location close to the orientation centre to help interns become more comfortable taking local transportation on their own.

Geography and Travel This day includes a detailed look at the geography of the host country including a look at numerous attractions that interns may choose to visit on their days off.
